The Woman's Club of Louisville was organized in 1890 by Susan Look Avery. Its founders confronted some of the social challenges of the early 19th century, like a woman's right to own property and have custody of their children in case of a divorce. Since then, the organization has been instrumental in forming the Legal Aid and Protective Committee (later known as the Legal Aid Society), building playgrounds and a children's library, and supporting the creation of a branch of the National Red Cross Association in Kentucky.

Today, the club's mission is to enrich, improve, inspire, and strengthen the community by supporting many charities and offering weekly programs open to the public.

This opportunity highlights a connection between our organization's missions and their target populations: women in need and women who want to make a difference. Almost 90% of our graduates are middle-aged Black women residing in West and Southwest Louisville zip codes. This $10,000 grant will pay for all of the costs associated with our next TEN beginner Adult Learn-to-Swim classes. This means the next 100 adults we teach (mostly Black women and mostly mothers) will be proud to say they learned to swim thanks to the generosity of the Woman’s Club of Louisville!
